Judging from the length of the blade, I would class this as a short sword (it has about a two foot blade, if you go by how many 'hands' long it is.)
This started life as me blocking out the shapes for a sword I was going to paint. I took a new approach of blocking in the whole object, then starting to erase areas of it to get an idea of the volume and shading - and it so turns out that doing this produces awesome, clean shapes.
I purposely didn't clean up the outlines too much on this, because I didn't want it to look like vector. (Instead, you can look at the shakiness of the lines and judge for yourself what my caffiene consumption today has been.)
Next : I _am_ actually going to render this with proper colours and metal surfaces and shiz.
Thanks due to Jess, who's lent me her Wacom Graphire4 for the week (because mine is STILL in Mt Isa.)
Fighting with short swords would tend to be a messy business - it's all about who can stab the other guy first, because you wouldn't get enough space to do anything else.
I might elongate the blade and turn this into a longsword when I paint it, the tassles and soforth problably suit a longsword better... (generally shortswords weren't something you advertised as a status symbol, etc.)

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
